Not Sure What to Do With Tofu?

Do you have any vegetarians or vegans under your roof– or are you curious about a more plant-based diet? Tofu (almost always available at BCS) is protein rich, lasts for weeks in the fridge, and is ready to take on almost any flavor profile.

Whether you are a long-time vegan or first-time tofu eater, it can feel intimidating to know how to prepare tofu in a way your family will be able to consume it without making that face.

You know the one I am talking about.

That mom/dad just made me eat bugs face that every kid seems to be born with the ability to pull off in a way that makes you feel really good as a cook (*read the heavy sarcasm here*).

One of our favorite ways to enjoy it is to pan-fry cubes of marinated tofu (sesame oil, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and a splash of balsamic oil) and then enjoy atop peanut noodles or coconut rice. This also makes fantastic leftovers.

With tofu you always want to keep in mind that it will take on the flavor of whatever you add to it, so don’t be afraid to experiment with some of your favorite sauces and flavors.

As far as texture, the longer you fry tofu (uncovered) the firmer it will get. If your family prefers a meatier bite, then try cooking it longer before adding in vegetables and noodles. Or if the thought of tofu is just too much for some of your people, you can try hiding it in a sauce as a hidden protein! In fact, I have even used it in spaghetti sauce. If you cube it small enough, they won’t even know it’s there!

The key here is not to be afraid of an ingredient like tofu that perhaps you aren’t familiar with. Experiment and bring a love for adventure into your kitchen as you try new foods and flavors! You might just discover a new favorite food or meal for your family!
