About: BCS’ mission is to provide a community where people can be responsible and accountable for meeting their basic needs, and to equip them with the tools they need to overcome financial difficulty. BCS is a financial literacy program that empowers working, struggling families to become self-sustainable. We do this by providing weekly access to donated food, clothing, and household items, but more importantly, by providing families with the tools they need to achieve financial literacy.

The Role: Birch Community Services (BCS) is seeking an External Relations Manager (ERM) to help execute their strategic relationship-building throughout the Portland Metro region. The ERM will be an integral member of the BCS Senior Leadership team to help establish our branding and revenue growth. This person will be passionate and diligent about fulfilling BCS’ mission.

Job scope

  • Work directly with the Executive Director and Program Manager to roll out the messaging framework to market the BCS brand and its distinct perspective
  • Increase visibility across channels and position Executive Director in front of key decision makers, resulting in positive reputation-building among participants, media, thought leaders and other key stakeholders
  • Increase awareness and donations through hosting internal events, attending external events and developing in-house communications initiatives, including grant writing, social media, newsletters and targeted dissemination of customized content
  • Direct the acknowledgment process for all donors, creating personalized correspondence


  • Develop creative and imaginative methods to show appreciation to donors
  • Plan and execute a mix of events including one fundraiser, open house and other events as needed, hosted jointly with third party organizations
  • Help establish a comprehensive mapping of key priorities surrounding branding to help drive outreach programs to the correct audiences
  • Manage 100+ individual and corporate relationships
  • Responsible for acquiring $350,000+ worth of fundraising revenue
  • Secure speaking roles for Executive Director at prominent conferences and webinars, coordinate logistics, and prep speaker accordingly
  • Provide high-quality writing and editing support on presentation materials, executive talking points, participant communication and content development
  • Deliver high-quality research related to new opportunities, technology innovations and key conferences, potential speaking roles, etc.
  • Help support development of knowledge booklets, qualification materials and value propositions
  • Leverage BCS’ social media programs across all external dissemination activities (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube)
  • Help manage BCS website and coordinate edits with team
  • Oversee BCS budget and share metrics on quarterly basis aligned with growth strategies and board priorities
  • Work in collaboration with the Executive Director to provide consistent engagement and quarterly/annual reporting to various donors
  • Lead strategy discussions and recommend and coordinate next actions for comprehensive communication plans, internally and externally
  • Maintain accurate records and information on Salesforce

Knowledge, skills & experience required

  • College degree with 3-5 years credible experience in a communications-related field
  • Experience in marketing, writing, event planning and project management
  • Strong event management skills and experience in planning and executing all aspects of fundraising aimed at business audiences
  • Good decision-making skills, excellent listener, and willingness to take initiative with limited oversight
  • High degree of organization and attention to detail and ability to manage a multitude of tasks
  • Proven ability to work with confidential information
  • Strong writing and editorial skills; in particular, the ability to distill complex ideas into accessible copy for a wide variety of audiences
  • Ability to create a solid internal and external network to ensure successful execution of events and other activities as it relates to goals and metrics
  • Self-motivation and entrepreneurship, with an appetite for working in a low-structured, low-resourced environment
  • Team oriented, with a strong commitment to team members and participant impact
  • Outstanding interpersonal and public speaking skills
  • Ability to communicate information and appreciation for support with enthusiasm & authenticity
